Homemade Granola

I cannot encourage you more to make your own granola. There are many different types of the stuff on the market that contain significant amounts of refined sugar, especially if you opt for some of the gluten free options, which can often be misleading. If you make your own at home, you know exactly what's in the cereal you're having for breakfast each morning and what's more, it is so easy, completely customisable, and keeps for ages. Here's how...

You can enjoy granola with greek yoghurt or almond milk, topped with your favourite fresh fruit. It's a fantastic cereal that is going to keep you feeling full all morning and provide you with loads of vitamins and healthy fats. Whether you like it nutty, crunchy, or fruity it can be completely customisable to your own taste. I've got a bit of a sweet tooth to satisfy, so I like to add in lots of dried fruit. You can even add in a couple of tablespoons of cacao powder to make it chocolate-y! Simply use the basic recipe below and then add in your favourite extras...

Homemade Granola
(This recipe makes about one baking tray but it can simply be doubled, depending on how much you want to make!)
Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Refined Sugar Free. 

Basic Ingredients - 
250g Gluten Free Rolled Oats 
15g Sesame Seeds
1 tsp Cinnamon
50ml Agave Nectar 
50ml Coconut Oil

Extras - 
15g Chia Seeds
25g Sunflower Seeds
50g Pecan Nuts
25g Pumpkin Seeds
50g Roughly chopped Almonds
50g Chopped, dried Apricot
20g Dried Cranberries
20g Raisins

Preheat your oven to 150 degrees and line a baking tray with greaseproof paper. Put the oats, sesame seeds and cinnamon together in a bowl and mix in the agave nectar and melted coconut oil until combined. Spread evenly onto a baking tray and place in the oven for around 8 minutes, or until the top layer is golden brown. Give them a stir to allow the rest of the oats to go a lovely colour. 

Remove from the oven and add your favourite seeds and nuts - above are a few recommendations of what I like to add in! Bake for a further 5-8 minutes. Let the granola cool and then add in the raisins, cranberries, apricot or other dried fruit. Store in a sealed container or jar, and enjoy!
